Peru houses one of the best-known ruin sites in the world: Machu Picchu. But hardcore historians and cultural buffs might enjoy indulging themselves with a visit to some of the country’s other, less-known and relatively tourist-free, historical sites. The best launching point for historical day trips is Trujillo, Peru’s third largest city.
An eight-hour bus ride from Lima, Trujillo has a long history of its own. Infamous conquistador Francisco Pizarro founded the city in 1534 partially for its proximity to the Chimu capital, Chan Chan, and it was here in 1820 that the Peruvian people first declared independence from Spain. The city’s colonial past can be felt by visiting the spacious Plaza de Armas (the central square) and the numerous mansions on the surrounding streets. Most of the historical buildings have been converted for modern use, though colonial aspects have been maintained.
Just out-of-town, however, is where the real wonders are. The largest site is Chan Chan, the capital of pre-Incan Chimu civilization, and the largest adobe city in the world. Before they were conquered by the Incas, the Chimus controlled the coast line from Lima to the Ecuadorian boarder and reigned from 900-1470 AD. In its prime, the city housed an estimated 50,000 people and covered 10 square miles, but years of environmental destruction have devastated the city’s remains. Today only one of the city’s nine royal compounds has been restored, so visitors need an active imagination to recreate the rest to its original splendor. The authentic and reconstructed wall designs that remain display sea birds, otters, and other images representative of sea life.
The second important ruin site near Trujillo is Huacas del Moche, believed to be the capital of the late Moche empire, which existed from 100-600 AD. This site is famous for its two large temples, called the Temple of the Sun-the largest adobe structure in the Americas-and the Temple of the Moon. Remarkably, the brilliant colors, designs, and carvings coating the Temple of the Moon survived the test of time and remain to dazzle visitors. Both sites, and Trujillo itself, are worth a visit for those interested in history and who are planning a trip to Peru.
